About a 4 hours car drive deep into the south right before the ground turns unapologetically dry and sore, the faded white cube house of Wassila emerges on the wide landscape of the small village Sidi Ali Ben Aoun not far away from the dessert. Wassila is, without doubt, one of the most authentic weavers in the region.
When you look inside her atelier, a whole colorful universe emerges. Carefully arranged undyed wool yarns that come from Wassila’s own sheep farm are hanging on a giant reddish-brown weaving loom. This machine has been masterfully operated by generations of female weavers. In between the studio’s countless props and tapestries, we find Nedra Chachoua’s designs: the pile of soft, delicately rolled and folded tapestries that took its identity within these four walls. Her pillow covers and tapestries which were thoughtfully manufactured in Wassila’s atelier showcase an uncompromisingly authentic aesthetic, combining the right amount of textures and color.
